Everyday Makeup Staples

Today’s post is a makeup related one, as you can probably tell from the title. I love makeup, I love pretty much everything about it, researching it - watching tutorials and reading blog posts, perusing the pretty makeup counters and purchasing it, applying it, the ultra girly packaging.

The one thing I don’t like about it is when you experiment and it backfires. Therefore, I tend to stick to my staples when it comes to my core products, such as base and mascara. I will experiment with brow products, lipsticks - I can’t get enough, blush and eyeshadow. But when it comes to the parts of my routine that, let’s face it, on busy mornings you just want to get done and hope and pray it goes right – I’m talking about foundation, bronzing and mascara – I do not mess around with these.

Mac Studio Fix Powder Foundation
I have tried a few foundations, well to be truthful probably quite a lot, and it took me a very long time before I found my staple. I think I have always been a powder foundation girl at heart but it took me a very long time before I discovered it. I have since flitted back and forth between liquid and powder but whenever I do I always come right back to this one. I first experimented with powder foundation using the Bareminerals Original Foundation, which is pretty darn amazing, but then I discovered Mac Studio Fix and I was blown away with the sheer amount of coverage you can achieve. It's compact, so super handy for travel and less mess than a loose powder, the coverage is great but still buildable. If you want full coverage keep applying with a dense brush, if you fancy something lighter than quickly brush over your face with a big fluffy brush and voila you look put together in seconds. Also, as I have very red undertones to my skin I try to avoid anything with warm pinky/orange bases and Mac’s colour range is just perfect. I am in the shade NC25 and find that the NC tones have the perfect amount of yellow to combat my redness and help make my face look a lot calmer. I have a feeling this will be in my everyday makeup bag for many years to come.

Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer
Now, I haven’t really ever played around with too many concealers. I do suffer from acne but I have never liked the feeling of having to go over every spot or discolouration mark with concealer to then go over again with a foundation. Besides, like I say I get pretty good coverage from my foundation anyway. So, this concealer I have only really tested under my eyes and it works amazingly. Surprise, surprise that this is a staple of mine as I think every beauty blogger under the sun has raved about this, but believe the hype, it is truly great. I am in the shade Fair and find that this works perfectly for under the eyes as is ever so slightly lighter than my skin tone. It has a great consistency, not too thin and runny, but it doesn’t crease or go cakey. Plus, this with powder over the top has amazing staying power, something that I value highly as I prefer not to slowly resemble a zombie more and more as the day goes on. An added plus to this product is its price, its super affordable and you can find it in most Boots or Superdrugs, as well as some supermarkets too, so win win!

Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick
This was Christmas gift a couple of years back and yup it is still going strong, although I have made a little dent in it, still no sign of hitting pan though - YAY! I have the shade Bronze but there are a few others in the range. This is a gorgeous mix of rosey pink and bronze hues, with the absolute perfect amount of shimmer - just enough to give you a subtle healthy glow and not too much to look like a unicorn has thrown up on your face! I am fairly pale and find a lot of bronzers can appear too dark or orange, and owing to the fact my skin has very pink undertones I just find blusher to emphasise this. So this product is ideal for me. It is a perfect hybrid of a blusher and bronzer combined so I just use this on my cheeks all year round and I look healthy and (subtly) bronzed without orange patches or very rosey cheeks!

Tarte Lights, Camera, Splashes! Mascara
I love Mascara! I adore it, however I hate applying it or trying to find the perfect mascara. I have very straight and fair lashes, that are adamant they don't want to hold a curl (even with eye lash curlers)! So I often find myself applying a mix of two or three mascaras to get the effect I want. Nice, dark and curled lashes that last all day. I have tried so many mascaras, so many, both high street and high end and although a couple have come close, such as Estee Lauder Double Wear Waterproof and L'Oreal Telescopic, this seems to be the best I have found so far. It is waterproof, as I find that tends to hold a curl more, but without being too dry and tough to get off. It is nice and dark so it makes those lashes perfectly visble and is great at lengthening too. Plus its cruelty free and Vegan, a great added bonus. The only downside is I bought this in America, where Tarte is much more available than here in the UK, so that does mean when it runs out I will likely have to order online which is not my preferred way of purchasing makeup. All in all this is a small sacrifice for a pretty amazing mascara!

So these are my everyday makeup staples that I rarely change. I love finding out about new products and hearing what works for others so feel free to leave me a comment to let me know what products you couldn't be without?
